Mental health is just as important as physical health. If someone has a broken arm, they go to the doctor. If they have the flu, they rest and recover. But when it comes to mental health struggles, too often, people hesitate to seek help due to stigma or misunderstanding. The reality is that anxiety, depression, and stress impact millions of teenagers, and ignoring mental health is no different than ignoring a physical illness.
Teen mental health challenges are on the rise. One in five teens experience a mental health condition each year, and half of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by age 14. School pressure, social media, relationships, and the weight of expectations can feel overwhelming, yet many teens feel like they have to manage on their own. The truth is, no one should have to face these challenges without support.
As a community, we have the power to create an environment where teens feel seen, heard, and supported. Checking in, listening without judgment, and validating their feelings can make all the difference. Small gestures—asking how they’re doing, encouraging them to take a break, or simply being present—help build trust and remind them that they are not alone. Teachers, parents, mentors, and friends all play a role in shaping a world where seeking help is encouraged and mental wellness is valued.
For teens who need more, TaraVista is a statewide resource for adolescents ages 13-17 (18 if attending high school) in need of a higher level of treatment. Our inpatient mental health care provides a safe, therapeutic environment where young people can receive the care and support they need to navigate challenges, build coping skills, and work toward healing.
This World Teen Mental Wellness Day let’s commit to being a source of support, advocate for open conversations, challenge stigma, and remind every teen that their mental health matters. A kind word, a listening ear, or a simple “I’m here for you” can be life-changing.
